In the face of self-esteem therapy and the agenda of the codependency movement, pastors and counselors must deal with people according to the root issues that drive their felt needs and not merely cater to their presenting problems.

In order to lead people in our counsel to the Lord we often need to tear down before we can build up.

While the codependency movement puts its finger on some real issues people face, its core presuppositions will lead us away from biblical teaching.

Our greatest problem is never personal woundedness but personal sin, so thoroughly biblical counseling must seek to address what is at the root of our presenting problems.
